Lecture de la nouvelle ‘Le Châle’ de Cynthia Ozick

Cynthia Ozick’s 1991 collection The Shawl, takes the readers to an exploration into an arching void left by the Shoah in History and within the human being. In the present article I propose to investigate how the void is eventually offset by the power of imagination which is embodied by the shawl of the title. Through a creative use of the descent into hell pattern, Ozick makes of the shawl a floating hyphen between the two stories of the collection. The shawl becomes a powerful symbol that invites the heroine (a young mother in the first story and an aged and childless lunatic in the second) to still rebuild her identity through otherness.
Le recueil de Cynthia Ozick le Châle (1991), incite le lecteur à explorer le vide laissé par la Shoah dans l’Histoire et au fond de l’être. Dans le présent article nous proposons d’étudier comment ce vide est finalement compensé par le pouvoir de l’imagination représenté par le châle du titre. Par le biais d’une utilisation créative du schéma structurel de la descente aux enfers, Ozick fait du châle un trait d’union flottant entre les deux histoires de son recueil. Le châle devient un symbole puissant qui invite l’héroïne (jeune mère à la première histoire, privée d’enfant, âgée et dérangée dans la seconde) à reconstruire son identité malgré tout par le truchement de l’altérité.
